ABC’s of Dog Training – Q

Q is for:

Quadramt – the four tyes of actions you can use to communicate with your dog: positive or negative reinforcement or punishment. I prefer positive reinforcement to train spefic actions and negative reinforcement to discourage unwanted behavior. I find punishment difficult because you have to either use something unpleasnt or introduce it in order to remove it.

Qualified – I consider myself qualified to train or at least consult on client dog training situation because I trained my service dog. This was a task I took seriously and pursued with vigor reading numerous books, watching videos, and taking classes.

Quality – increase the quality of the reinforcement you offer to increase enthusiasm or compliance.

Quantity – varying the amout of the reinforcement offered can better communicate approval of the behavior performed.

Quick – timing is paramount when using a clicker as a training tool which is actually to quickest way to acheive goals with your training. In my experience once your dog understands what you asking and offering a quality treat aids in a quick response from your dog.

Quizzical – the look you get when your dog is trying to decipher you body language and verbal cues to figure out what you are trying to say.
