I started this journey about 10 years ago when I was researching my options for getting a service dog. I had to learn what a service dog was, fundamentally, and who can or should train them. My diagnosis a couple of years earler prompted this research and the more I learned the more I became committed to homeschooling my service dog.
Then I researched training methods starting here:
- The Thinking Dog by Gail Fisher
- Reaching the Animal Mind by Karen Pryor
- The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller
And later when clients asked for training classes at our grooming salon I got a book/DVD set called
- “Coaching People to Train Their Dogs” by Terry Ryan
And of course videos by Kathy Sdao, and many others through Tawzer Dog (a netflix style rental service via mail back in the day before they started a streaming sevice) plus I picked up my first Zak George DVD at a bookstore back when he was doing a British dog trick show called ‘Superfetch’. I’m currently listening to Zak George’s book ‘Dog Training rEvolution’ and so far I’ve been impressed. I wholeheartedly recommend Zak’s training book and videos!
I’m going to read ‘Coersion and its fallout’ when I can manage it or when I can hire someone to read it out loud.
